Over four years of review, the Missouri Pregnancy-Associated Mortality Review Board found more maternal deaths occurred 43–365 days after birth than during pregnancy or the first 12 postpartum weeks. In response—and given current gaps in postpartum care standards—the Missouri Perinatal Quality Collaborative (MO PQC) partnered with the Missouri Hospital Association and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services to form the Missouri Optimizing Postpartum Care Task Force. The group created The One-year Postpartum Pathway to expand the definition of postpartum care and establish standards for continuous care through 12 months after delivery.
